![]() 10tons latest release on Nintendo Switch pits two pioneers of their respective fields against each other in a conflict of literature vs science and pen vs sword in their bizarre, explosive twin-stick shooter, Tesla vs Lovecraft. There’s much more to Tesla VS Lovecraft than Time Recoil, bringing you the bombastic arcade fun desired from this genre, but doesn’t quite have the gameplay variation or immersion like JYDGE.Whether it's Holmes outwitting Moriarty or Danger Mouse defeating Baron Von Greenback, most of us have had an adversary or two during our lives. Very few top-down shooters can get creatively insane like a 10tons game. I enjoyed Tesla VS Lovecraft enough to keep playing on a higher difficulty, but I do believe much was due to playing it on the Switch where I can take this on-the-go and find someone to play local co-op with. It’s weird because the very final conflict between you and Mr. The biggest change from advancement is fighting enemies who deal more damage and contain more health. You’ll revisit stages and fight the same creatures, having to do it all over again once you advance to a higher difficulty. It does come to a point where the game runs out of new toys and recycles the same everything at you. Killing fantasy creatures with steampunk material feel exhilarating…for a bit. You’re never given total domination with any of these options, just less stress on your survival. You’ll have a map containing all the missions, which can be replayed at any point for a better score, but there will be passive skills to upgrade as well, spent using the earnings from your missions. 10tons is known to test your skills to its limits with tough odds and that challenge is brilliantly implemented most of the time. Based on my experience, I would place this right in between JYDGE & Time Recoil.ġ0tons keeps the creative spirit of their top-down shooters by throwing a variety of enemies at you, containing their own attacks and weaknesses, but you are almost always dealing with a large number that blasting away hordes might not always be so easy, especially on the easiest difficulty. Where those games might have shared too many assets, Tesla VS Lovecraft is built from the ground of with kinetic steampunk goodness. Much influence from JYDGE and Time Recoil is carried over, such as warping from one spot to the next. There are also mech pieces to collect, enough will activate your special weapon, giving you limited chaotic destruction. You can only carry one weapon at a time, but they’re always placed at specific points of the map in case you ever feel like swapping, with your upgrades carrying over to any gun you decide to wield. You might occasionally have an objective like destroying an objective or defeating a boss, but the general gameplay retains to simply killing a ton of enemies on-screen. ![]() You are blasting these creatures with an array of crazy steampunk guns that along with your abilities, upgrade each time you level up, giving you one of three diverse options, suiting to your preferred play style. Each level pits you in a supernatural steampunk arena with huge numbers, ranging from every classic Lovecraft monsters. ![]() The game is essentially a top-down horde mode shooter with MOBA elements. Tesla VS Lovecraft is their first official step into 2018, and also, borrowing some inspiration from their best work! On the bright side, all these games were just ports from previous years. They brought JYDGE and a couple of other neat games on the Switch, but each release I’ve reviewed was a little less special than the last, with Baseball Riot being the one that got me a little concern about this indie publisher. 10tons Ltd was a welcoming indie studio on my return to doing more indie game reviews.
